My Process

A child-led approach

I work from a non-directive, child-led approach, which means that the child is given the freedom to lead their play and explore what feels important to them, at their own pace.

Rather than telling a child what to play with or directing them towards a particular outcome, I create a safe, accepting and supportive environment where they can express themselves naturally through play. I follow the child's lead, allowing their play to guide the therapeutic process while providing appropriate support, understanding and boundaries.

Sessions

Individual play therapy sessions are approximately 40–45 minutes long and take place at the same time, same day and same place, to provide children with consistency and a sense of safety.

I work within a minimum commitment of 12 sessions. This allows enough time for a trusting therapeutic relationship to develop and for the child to experience the benefits of the therapeutic process.

Every child is different. Some children may need fewer sessions, while others may benefit from a longer period of support. After the initial 12 sessions, we will review the child's progress together and consider whether they are ready to end therapy or whether continuing would be beneficial.

Parent meetings

Every 6 weeks, I meet with parents or caregivers to provide an update on the therapeutic process and discuss how the child is progressing.

Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe space for children. Parent meetings therefore focus on general progress, themes and helpful guidance, rather than sharing everything a child has said or done during their sessions. This allows the child to feel that their playroom is a safe and private space where they can express themselves freely.

When confidentiality needs to be broken

A child's safety always comes first. While confidentiality is respected throughout the therapeutic process, I will contact a parent or caregiver immediately if a child:

  • Is being hurt or is at risk of being harmed

  • Is hurting or intends to hurt someone else

  • Expresses a desire or intention to hurt themselves

In these circumstances, parents or caregivers will be informed so that the appropriate support and safety measures can be put in place.

My goal is to create a consistent, safe and trusting space where each child can work through their experiences at their own pace, while parents feel supported and included in the journey.
